چکیده

The black sea urchin (Arbacia lixula, Linnaeus, 1758) is a non-edible marine echinoderm of high ecological importance with the potential to affect communities. A. lixula were sampled monthly for one year from supralittoral fringe at two locations in Pagasitikos Gulf, north-western Aegean Sea. Morphometric characteristics exhibited significant spatiotemporal variation. population closer proximity treated sewage effluent outflow significantly higher biometric relationships resulting possible improved physiological conditions. Spatial distribution clumped pattern dispersion, consisting predominantly six age classes. dominant cohort was four-year class, comprising 31.2% total population. Significant negative allometric between all morphometric characteristics. maximum approximate estimated 15.27 years. von Bertalanffy growth equation entire as: test diameter = 62.881×1−e−0.196×Age+1.147. gonadosomatic index indicated seasonal cycle peak late spring. sexual maturity 4.45 We observed number females than expected site effluents (32% female number).

Natural or Naturalized? Phylogeography Suggests That the Abundant Sea Urchin Arbacia lixula Is a Recent Colonizer of the Mediterranean

We present the global phylogeography of the black sea urchin Arbacia lixula, an amphi-Atlantic echinoid with potential to strongly impact shallow rocky ecosystems. Sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase gene of 604 specimens from 24 localities were obtained, covering most of the distribution area of the species, including the Mediterranean and both shores of the Atlantic. Genetic d...

The Sea Urchin Arbacia lixula: A Novel Natural Source of Astaxanthin

Several echinoderms, including sea urchins, are valuable sources of bioactive compounds but their nutraceutical potential is largely unexplored. In fact, the gonads of some sea urchin species contain antioxidants including carotenoids and polyhydroxylated naphthoquinones (PHNQ's), such as echinochrome A. Astaxanthin is known to have particular bioactivity for the prevention of neurodegenerative...

Grazing by the sea urchins Arbacia lixula L. and Paracentrotus lividus Lam. in the Northwest Mediterranean

The sea urchins Arbacia lixula and Paracentrotus lividus are common on shallow subtidal reefs in the Mediterranean. Previous studies on the ecology of these species reported that P. lividus is generally more abundant on horizontal or gently sloping substrata, where it forages mainly on erect algae. In contrast, A. lixula is more common on vertical substrata and it is considered a main grazer of...

Population dynamics of the Metapenaeus monoceros (Fabricius, 1798) in North-eastern Mediterranean Sea

Monthly sampling of speckled shrimp was conducted by bottom trawl in the Iskenderun Bay between November 2009 and October 2010. There was a linear relationship between carapace length and total length in males and females (TL = -0.112 + 0.2294*CL R2 = 0.8298, n = 327) for males, (TL = -0.3918 + 0.2731 * CL R2 = 0.8919, n = 457) for females, and (TL = -0.378 + 0.2684 * CL R2=0.8492, n=784) for t...
